With talks of 4IR and Covid19 accelerating our dependence on technology in order to study or work, we’re still confronted with chasms between the advantaged and disadvantaged. You can either lament the situation or wait for someone else to solve these problems. Or, in the case of Headset Solutions, you can do your bit in helping to bridge these gaps.
Simanyene High School gets connected
Simanyene High School, based in Asanda Village in Strand, Cape Town is home to 46 teachers and about 1400 students. It’s situated in a disadvantaged area with a large number of their students either coming from single-parent homes or who live with their grandparents. Simanyene is a Government-funded school and only necessities such as textbooks and basic laboratory equipment are provided. This, unfortunately, leaves a shortfall in extra-curricular activities, sports and IT. Like many schools in similar situations, they face challenges in giving their staff and students access to the internet for research and study purposes.
On 31 August 2020, Headset Solutions donated 6 laptops to Simanyene. Each laptop came pre-loaded with Microsoft Office which would give learners the tools, not just for their learning, but to also develop skills which would stand them in good stead. These 6 laptops form part of the commitment Headset Solutions made to donate 40 laptops.
Growing the country starts in your Community
Headset Solutions believes that making a difference in education is critical for the future of South Africa. Their investment in learnerships and internships within the school system has seen them spend approximately R700 000 per annum for the past 5 years. In the past 3 years they have offered 32 bursaries to students in disadvantaged schools and in 2020, 5 bursaries were offered which would enable youth to gain access to the working world.
Headset Solutions offer learnerships and internships to disadvantaged students, which run for a year. At the end of the year, Headset Solutions either find a job for these students in their business, or in other businesses.
Headset Solutions’ main aim is to facilitate job creation by providing access for young people through their bursaries so that they are able to contribute to the economy and also uplift their own communities.
Being part of the solution
Creating a sustainable society is critical in growing this country and ensuring that our young people are able to confidently contribute to their future. Sustainability is a core tenet of Headset Solutions. Their head office in the Western Cape is off grid, with solar panels providing their power needs while boreholes see to their water requirements.
In the words of Eldridge Cleaver, “There is no more neutrality in the world. You either have to be part of the solution, or you’re going to be part of the problem.” It’s clear the choice Headset Solutions has made.
